SilverStripe CMS becomes the first Microsoft Certified open source web app

Yesterday, I received an email from SilverStripe Co-Founder, Sigurd Magnusson. For all the years I have been corresponding with Sigurd, I don't think I've ever seen him as excited as he was this time in breaking the news. SilverStripe, a web development company delivering open source content management systems (CMS) has achieved Certification for Windows Server 2008 R2 for version 2.4.0 of their flagship product, SilverStripe CMS. This is a world first, as the software is the only truly open source web application to achieve certification on the Windows platform.

What is a little different about this story is that it is not only SilverStripe's press relations people making a big deal about this story. Microsoft is making a big deal about the accomplishments of SilverStripe. Andrew Gordan, Microsoft's New Zealand’s Platform Strategy Manager writes:

A large amount of the innovation in the software world is happening on the web and in the cloud, and in addition to that, we are seeing increased awareness and acceptance of open source software on the Microsoft Windows platforms.

Microsoft's Certified for Windows programs are well known for indicating software and hardware products that have been thoroughly tested to work well on Microsoft Windows and as of today, SilverStripe CMS is the first Open Source web application to complete the comprehensive testing necessary to achieve "Certified for Windows Server 2008 R2" status.

In his own blog post, Sigurd mentions that the certification for SilverStripe has been a long but rewarding road. A large proportion of the SilverStirpe's  community and clients use Microsoft servers, databases, and other technology. Over the past three years there an effort has been made for the SilverStripe CMS to work with Microsoft's operating system, web servers, and SQL Server database product.

A Microsoft case study on SilverStripe's road to securing the Microsoft certification offers a valuable timeline on the technical aspects that took place to get SilverStripe 2.4.0 certified. Improvements in the SilverStripe CMS as well as Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS) and SQL Server paved the way for this success.

Using the new URL Rewriting support found in IIS 7.0 and newer versions, SilverStripe was able to deliver the full functionality of its software on a native Microsoft web server, without relying on third-party plug-ins. SilverStripe v2.3.0 was released in February 2009, and for the first time, it could be easily installed on an IIS platform.

“IIS matches Apache for hosting PHP applications on Windows and also provides additional benefits through improved ease of integrating with Microsoft products,” said Jorke Odolphi, Web Platform Architect, Microsoft Australia.

SilverStripe has subsequently been working with Microsoft to further simplify the installation process on Windows, and was invited in May 2009 as one of the first ten products to be installed with the then-new Microsoft Web Platform Installer (WebPI). The WebPI was a product developed by Microsoft to address the growing need to install open source and .NET web applications on Windows servers.

Shortly after this, Microsoft developed Wincache, a purpose-built tool to speed up PHP-based applications, and SilverStripe has also been verified to run reliably on this.

In May 2010 SilverStripe 2.4.0 was released, with native support for SQL Server 2008. The installer was upgraded to allow users to easily and conveniently choose SQL Server as their database.

SilverStripe apparently sees this certification not only as a milestone for their company but for the open source movement as well. On his blog, Sigurd writes, "We're proud because all of the people who have been asking for our software to run on Windows now know that it runs really well. We're also very proud to be part of a global milestone in corporate IT accepting and embracing open source software."
